VIDEO: EXTENDED INTERNATIONAL TRAILER FOR "THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL"

Directed by Scott Derickson the film stars Keanu Reeves, Jennifer Connelly, Kathy Bates and Jaden Smith.

The film, a contemporary reinvention of the 1951 science fiction classic, is a presentation of the makers of Ice Age, Fantastic Four and The Day After Tomorrow.

Mankind has long been fascinated by the possibility of life beyond Earth. Science fiction literature and films have served to not only entertain, but to address our questions, hopes and fears about extraterrestrial life. Such speculation has captivated our collective imagination and inspired the development of new technology to explore the farthest reaches of our universe and the very real possibility that we are not alone.



Renowned scientist Dr. Helen Benson (Jennifer Connelly) finds herself face to face with an alien called Klaatu (Keanu Reeves), who travels across the universe to warn of an impending global crisis.

When forces beyond Helen's control treat the extraterrestrial as a hostile and deny his request to address the world's leaders, she and her estranged stepson Jacob (Jaden Smith) quickly discover the deadly ramifications of Klaatu's claim that he is "a friend to the Earth."

Now Helen must find a way to convince the entity who was sent to destroy us that mankind is worth saving - but it may be too late.



The process has begun…

"This film is a cautionary tale about human survival on the precipice and our relationship to the planet," says Keanu Reeves, discussing the riveting new movie. "It's about the human character, human nature, the fact that it is only when our backs are up against the wall that we do anything to change our behavior."

Keanu Reeves portrays Klaatu, an alien whose arrival on our planet triggers a global upheaval. As governments and scientists race to unravel the mystery behind the visitor's appearance, a woman (Jennifer Connelly) and her young stepson get caught up in his mission - and come to understand the ramifications of his being a self-described "friend to the Earth."

The original film, directed by Robert Wise dealt with the Cold War and the nuclear threat. Becoming a sci fi classic, it was a movie of its time. Compelling, it also delivered a pertinent message about the lack of international cooperation and the subsequent dangers.



"I'm a tremendous fan of the original film," says Director Scott Derrickson (The Exorcism of Emily Rose) "It was so interesting and original and progressive for its time - in the visual effects, in the way it commented on the Cold War tensions of that era, in the idea of seeing humanity from an outsider's perspective. It's a truly great film, but most modern audiences haven't seen it. I feel like people deserve to know this story, and this was a fantastic opportunity to retell it in a way that addresses the issues and conflicts that are affecting us now."

Promising some extraordinary visual effects along with a deeply impacting message for humans, The Day The Earth Stood Still is all set for a World-Wide Release on Dec 12.

TRAILER FOR THE MOVIE : 2012 (JULY 2009)

Not to be confused with 2012 Doomsday, Roland Emmerich is working on a new movie titled 2012, based on a Mayan belief that the world will end in 2012. The movie 2012 has an ensemble cast, including John Cusack, Amanda Peet, Danny Glover, Thandie Newton, Oliver Platt, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Woody Harrelson. It should be released in July 2009.

VIDEO: UFO FILES RELEASED WITH DR. DAVID CLARKE

An unidentified flying object (UFO) which almost collided with an airliner flying towards Heathrow airport could be mistaken for a storyline from science fiction. But the near miss is one of the accounts recorded in new files released by The National Archives.

These are from a series of 19 files released in October 2008 by the Ministry of Defence (MoD) that are now available to download from The National Archives website.

STEVEN GREER - BEFORE HE WAS FAMOUS

The person behind the extremely well intentioned, "The Disclosure Project" Steven Greer has always been followed by his fair share of controversy, I as still surprised to see Greer pop up when I recently happened across a repeat of an old program from the "National Geographic Explorer" series; the episode in question was aired in 1994 and was titled, "Searching for Extraterrestrials".

It was fairly tame and really just the usual Seth Shostak fodder, i.e. 'SETI vs The ETH' with the former smugly portraying believers of the latter as cranks, weirdos, etc.

But, that wasn't what caught my attention. What did catch my attention was a younger (but strangely older looking) Greer taking a small group of people out into the Californian desert with the following voice over:

"No telescopes, no computers, the tool is telepathy The goal? A very close encounter."

Then Greer went on to elaborate on how to set the landing/flashlights out in the event of a 'Close approach,' of course this was a good 6-7 yaers before the infamous disclosure project video was shot but I still for some reason found it somewhat alarming.

THE ABDUCTION OF CARL HIGDON

A most unusual case of alien abduction would occur on October 25, 1974, in Medicine Bow National Park in Wisconsin. Carl Higdon, who was hunting for elk, had an experience that would haunt him the rest of his natural life. As he shot his rifle at an elk, the projectile moved in slow motion! It traveled the short course of about 50 feet and then fell into the snow. As this happened, he felt the most strange sensation come over his body.

Humanoid Entity:
Still shocked by what had just occurred, he then saw a humanoid being not too far away. This being, unlike most reports, was over six feet tall. He had a black coverall on, and a wide belt. Higdon could clearly make out a six-pointed star and a yellow emblem on his uniform. The entity had hair which stood straight out from his head. The alien had no eyebrows or chin. He was bow-legged, with long arms, and rod appendages where his hands should have been.

Alien Medicine:
According to Higdon, the humanoid began to talk to him. The hunter was asked if he was hungry. The humanoid threw something toward him that resembled pills, and he was told if he took one of them, he would not be hungry for several days. Higdon took one of the pills. Could the being, seeing that Higdon was hunting for food, assumed that he was hungry? The humanoid then pointed at the hunter, and he was immediately enclosed in a transparent covering, and had a helmet on.

A Distant Planet:
He then saw two more alien beings, and five elk that Higdon had been hunting earlier in the day. The elk showed no signs of life-they appeared to be frozen in their tracks. Higdon was told that the aliens had traveled the distance of 163,000 light years, arriving in a flash. Suddenly, all of them, including Higdon were at the alien planet. The planet looked very modernistic, with buildings that Higdon said looked like the Seattle Space Needle. The planet's sun was of great intensity, which hurt his eyes. The next thing the hunter knew, he was back in Medicine Bow Park.

Pickup Truck Relocated:
Over two hours had passed since Higdon had first seen the alien. When he arrived back at his original location, he felt cold and disoriented. At first, he could not locate his pick-up truck, finally finding it three miles from its original location. It was stuck in the mud. He called for help on his CB radio. Soon, the local sheriff arrived, and could easily see that Higdon was in a state of hysteria, and was exhausted. Higdon began to shout, "They took my elk!" Higdon was taken to a local hospital.

Investigation Conducted:
A most unbelievable thing had occurred. According to hospital records, the tuberculosis scars on his lungs were now gone. Investigation into the case brought out the fact that Higdon's wife, along with two other people, had seen a red-green-white flashing light near the area that Higdon was hunting in. Investigators on Higdon's case were Dr. Leo Sprinkle, Professor of Psychology, University of Wyoming, Rick Kenyon, and Robert Nantkes, MUFON field investigators, and Frank Bourke, of the National Star Investigator.

The Real Thing?:
The case of Carl Higdon seems more like a script from a bad science fiction movie, and there is not really enough evidence to confirm such an incredible story. It is interesting, but belongs in the folklore category more than anywhere else.
