VIDEO:MYSTERIOUS SEA CREATURES: Exhibition at Berwick Gymnasium Gallery Displays Artist's Conception while Exploring Northumberland's Seaside Tales

Artist Kim L Pace has spent the last eight months researching the mythical creatures and tales associated with the Northumberland coastline, the culmination of which can be witnessed in a fascinating free exhibition, at English Heritage’s Berwick Gymnasium Gallery, Berwick-upon Tweed (Northumberland) from 16 May – 28 June.

The exhibition forms part of The Berwick Gymnasium Fellowship Program, an initiative supported by English Heritage, Northern Rock Foundation and Arts Council England, North East, that invites three artists to create a body of work in response to the extraordinary border town and its coastal location.

Sea Change delves into local stories, anecdotes and superstitions associated with the sea including fishing disasters and shipwrecks, creating alien-like characters that gravitate towards shorelines and rock-pools. There are three interrelated parts to Sea Change.

The first is a large-scale diagram which maps out the different elements of research, ideas, experiences and references that have formed part of the project.

The second part includes drawings, photographs and objects arranged into a traveling museum of curios and the third is a film that combines stop-motion animation with other extraordinary imagery to produce a mysterious and compelling underwater world populated by eerie and fantastical creatures.

Kim L Pace has taken her investigative brand of art to audiences around the world with venues in Australia, Ireland and USA. Kim uses history, folk tales, literature and anthropology to create drawings, installations and animations that use mysterious and evocative subject matter that can’t always be fully explained.

Kim L Pace said: “Berwick Beach has a unique, atmospheric, other worldly feel - providing a physical sensation like you’ve landed on another planet. Sea Change has enabled me to work creatively developing my art, I’ve been deeply influenced by an experiential response to living in this curious border location.

"Berwick is very much about the natural environment, which has had a profound inspirational influence on my work. I’ve been able to translate the invaluable freedom provided by The Berwick Gymnasium Fellowship Program into a body of work that will hopefully have people both scratching their head in wonderment and celebrating the beautifully mysterious location of Berwick-upon-Tweed.”

Visitor Information: Berwick Gymnasium Gallery, Berwick Barracks, The Parade, Berwick-upon-Tweed, TD15 1 DG. Entry to the Berwick Gymnasium Gallery is free and the gallery is open Wednesday-Sunday from 11am-5pm.
