It's not the sequel to War of the Worlds! Astronomers at the Very Large Telescope (VLT) site in Chile are trying to measure the distortions of Earth's ever changing atmosphere. Constant imaging of high-altitude atoms excited by the laser -- which appear like an artificial star -- allow astronomers to instantly measure atmospheric blurring. In this case, the VLT was observing our Galaxy's center, and so Earth's atmospheric blurring in that direction was needed.

The "Lightcraft" is a laser-propelled spacecraft concept that could ultimately run on other beamed energies, such as microwave.



The greatest restriction to space travel as far as I can see is that the fuel that is needed to propel the vehicle is carried on the spacecraft.

"If we use energy to travel the universe in a different way then that fuel may not have to be carried or just a little fuel may be needed to be carried, a much better idea" states Dr. Leik Myrabo working at the White Sands Missile Range.
